Yorktown Community Schools is a premier public school district, serving the Town of Yorktown in Mount Pleasant Township, the west-central portion of Delaware County, Indiana. The suburban district adjoins Muncie Community Schools on the east and Anderson Community Schools on the west. Yorktown Community Schools is also only thirty-five miles northeast of the northeast side of Indianapolis, Indiana, with easy access to Interstate 69.
Yorktown Community Schools includes four school buildings: Pleasant View Elementary School (K-2), Yorktown Elementary School (3-5), Yorktown Middle School (6-8), and Yorktown High School (9-12).
Yorktown Community Schools has long been known as a high-performing school district, with notable programs and achievements. Yorktown High School was honored as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2012. Yorktown High School has also been consistently ranked as a U. S. News and World Report Best High School in Indiana. Recent Yorktown graduates have enrolled at Stanford University, Yale University, Harvard University, Columbia University, the University of Chicago, West Point, the Naval Academy, and the Air Force Academy, as well as other leading state and national schools.
The district offers a very comprehensive curriculum, with an Early College program accredited through Indiana University. The high school also offers fifteen Advanced Placement courses, eight dual credit courses through Indiana University, and three dual credit courses through Ivy Tech/PLTW. Yorktown’s graduates complete Advanced Placement courses at a higher rate and with higher scores than any other traditional high school in the area. Typically more than fifty-percent of Yorktown graduates earn Indiana Academic Honors Diplomas. Yorktown High School has adopted two Locally Created Pathways, one for students preparing to enter the workforce immediately and one for Fine Arts, either in music or visual arts. Yorktown also offers a wide array of career and technical education programs and organizations, including Project Lead the Way (PLTW) at all grades, K-12, and DECA, HOSA, and FCCLA at Yorktown High School. The district’s theatre, music, and visual arts departments are also comprehensive.
Yorktown has a rich athletic tradition, offering 22 sports and winning 226 Delaware County championships, 86 Hoosier Heritage Conference titles, 181 IHSAA sectional titles, 44 IHSAA regional titles, 22 semi-state titles, 11 IHSAA state runner-up finishes, and 8 IHSAA state championships. The championships were earned boys golf (1975), girls golf (1976 and 2012), and girls volleyball (2000, 2011, 2016, 2018, 2020).
District enrollment has grown consistently since 2010, increasing by more than one-third since then. The district has undertaken facilities improvements in recent years, completing expansion and renovation of Pleasant View Elementary School in 2019 and completing a new Transportation Center in 2019. Renovation and expansion of Yorktown Middle School and Yorktown Elementary School were completed in 2022, with expansion of Yorktown High School completed in 2025. A new tennis facility was completed in 2022. Additional athletic improvements are also planned.
